A Little Part of Me
Social and Autobiographical Works - Installation, Sculpture, and Painting
“A Little Part of Me”* is the physical manifestation of what I think of as my responsibility to speak my truth, honour my silences, and take agency to create an authentic space where my personal narratives of vulnerability can be located in the political discourse of feminism in the status quo.
I created an installation of a room that encapsulates within the four walls, my trauma and solitude associated with girlhood, and juxtaposes them with the rage and grief that overflows through the walls of the room. While the inner walls imitate the physical room and emotional experience from my teenage - with pink walls, childhood imprinted photographs, illustrated figures, the outer walls depict the rage and pain that the room could not contain in its confinement. The rage flows out.
Works by Tracy Emin and Louise Bourgeois, surrealist works, horror as a form of genre exploring rage and violence, have conceptually and visually inspired and informed the making of this project.
My intention with this piece of work was to built an intersection between my most private experiences, and public engagement. Placing the room as an installation that can be accessed and moved around by people initiates a close conversation between me and my witnesses.
